Wildcats Win Big in Homecoming Gridiron Tilt
Posted on September 17, 2005

LAWRENCEBURG, Tenn. – On Homecoming night 2005, the Lawrence County Wildcats improved their season record to 4-1 with a victory over Hickman County (2-3) in a 4A-Region 5 battle at Hendrix-Staggs Stadium.

The Wildcats’ offense was the story of the first half, as on the first Wildcat possession of the game, Garrick Barnett found Matt Moss for a 50 yard touchdown, and after the Nick Campbell kick, the Wildcat lead was 7-0. The Bulldogs, however came right back and moved the ball right down the field, deep into Lawrence County territory, but in the shadow of their own goalposts, the Wildcats stiffened and stopped Hickman County on fourth down, taking over on downs.
The ensuing drive spanned the quarter, and was capped off by a Jeffrey Chambers touchdown run to double the Lawrence County lead to 14-0. Following a John Dansby Interception late in the half, Barnett found Garrett Hughes in the back corner of the endzone with 18 seconds left, stretching the halftime advantage to 21-0.

The second half, however, saw the Wildcats’ defense step up and take control. Through much of the first half, the Bulldogs had gashed Lawrence County on the wingback reverse, but as the game progressed, the line for the Wildcats began filling the holes that had been there earlier. Lawrence County stopped the Bulldogs on fourth down for the third time early in the third quarter, but the offense couldn’t take advantage, as Will Yates was dropped in his own end zone for a safety. After the Matt Moss free kick, the defense stepped up and got the ball back, and Barnett took control once again. He led the offense down the field, finding Casey Putman for the touchdown late in the third quarter, Barnett’s third touchdown pass to the third different receiver. Barnett also ran for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, providing the final margin of victory at 35-2.

The Wildcats now enter their bye week, and they will return to action on Thursday, September 29, when they host Maplewood (4-0) at Hendrix-Staggs Stadium at 7:00.
