MT.PLEASANT – The Summertown Lady Eagles and Eagles opened the Region 6-A tournament
here Monday night, just like they finished the District tournament – by posting
double-digit wins. The Lady Eagles downed Santa Fe 87-60, while the Eagles took
down Huntland 65-40.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Eagles controlled the opening tip and got a quick
feed from Haley Lovett to Emily Franks for a basket, as the Lady Eagles would
never trail in the game. Multiple baskets by Franks, Jennifer Peterson, and
Tamia Tucker would push the Lady Eagles ahead early.
Santa Fe would keep it close thru the first period, then the Lady Eagles took
over. Summertown led 24-17 at the end of the first, but soon blew them out
in the second period. Opening with a Beth Long trey, the Lady Eagles made a
13-0 run to open the second period and outscored Santa Fe 34-11 in the period
to hold a 58-28 halftime lead.
The second half would be more of the same, as multiple baskets by Franks,
Lovett, Peterson and Tucker would extend the Lady Eagles lead to as much as 40
(74-34) with 2:48 remaining in the third. At that point, the Lady Eagles
reserves took over and finished the game. The Lady Eagles led 78-43 at the
end of the third and took the win by the final score of 87-60.
A total of 11 Lady Eagles scored in the contest, led by Jennifer Peterson with
17 points, Tamia Tucker with 15, Emily Franks and Haley Lovett (1 trey) with 12
each, Brandi Newton with 7, Beth Long with 6 (2 treys), Paige Smith and Allison
Durham (1 trey) with 5 each, Mallory Scott and Erica Peterson with 3 each and
Alexa Perry with 2.
Santa Fe was led by McKenzie White with 22 points (1 trey), Lauren Gardner with 17,
Lindsey Sewell with 12, Rachel Priest (1 trey) and Tiffany Black with 4 each and
Brittany Gray with 1.
With the win, the Lady Eagles advance to the Region Semi-Finals on Wednesday,
March 1st @ 7:00 PM. Their opponent will be the winner of Tuesday nights’
Perry County/Moore County game. A victory will put them in the championship
and an automatic berth in the Sub-State.
In the boys’ game, as in the girls’ game, the Eagles would never trail in the
contest. Opening with a feed from Chris Carrington to Cody Braden for a
basket, followed by a Braden trey, the Eagles maintained a 2-5 point lead thru
the opening period. Baskets by Nick Nance and A.J. Klinghard, free throws by
Carrington and another trey by Braden would keep the pace for the Eagles. The
Eagles would hold a 14-7 lead at the end of the first period.
In the second period, the Eagles would open with a basket by Klinghard and a
pair of free throws by Braden. A steal by Wesley Clark would lead to a Jason
Smith trey and the Eagles would be up 21-11 with 4:23 to play in the first
half. Huntland would cut the lead to 23-17 by the 1:12 mark of the period,
but then Eagle reserve Wes Long would get the hot hand. Long would nail 3
treys in the final minute and a half, extending the Eagles lead to 32-17 at the
intermission. By the time Long sank his third trey, the crowd was going wild
and Eagles coach Les Trotter resembled a Full Gospel preacher, dancing his way
down the sidelines.
In the second half, the Eagles would maintain their lead, although Huntland
would edge out an 11-10 scoring advantage in the period, setting the score at
42-28 at the end of the third. The final period would open with 3 free
throws by Huntland, but the Eagles soon responded with back to back treys by
Nick Nance and Smith, pushing the lead to 48-31 and forcing a Huntland timeout.
The Eagles would continue their assault, with several baskets by Bret Holden
and treys by Long and Logan Harville to take the 65-40 win.
The Eagles sank a total of 12 treys in the contest. Scoring was led by Wes
Long with 14 (4 treys), Cody Braden with 13 (3 treys), Bret Holden with 9, Nick
Nance with 8 (1 trey), Jason Smith (2 treys), Chris Carrington (1 trey) and
A.J. Klinghard with 6 each, followed by Logan Harville with 3 (1 trey).
Huntland was led by Adonte Taylor with 13 (2 treys), Colton Roberts, Shane
Jones (1 trey), and John Patton with 6 each, T.J. Moss with 5, followed by T.J.
Burks and Freddie Arnold with 2 each.
With the win, the Eagles advance to the Region Semi-finals at 8:30 PM on
Wednesday, March 1st. Their opponent will be the winner of Tuesday night’s Mt.
Pleasant/Columbia Academy game. A victory will put them in the championship
and an automatic berth in the Sub-State.
