Waterloo Alabama Dropped As End of Trail Of Tears Bike Ride
Posted on July 03, 2006

Organizers of the annual Trail of Tears motorcycle ride have dropped Waterloo, Alabama, as the official final stop and are now suggesting Florence, Alabama.

But Florence officials are expected to ask the ride organizers to reconsider having the annual event end at the city’s McFarland Park because of complaints they’ve received.

Motorcyclists travel the 230 miles that retrace the route American Indians were forced to take on foot and by wagon from Chattanooga to Waterloo, where they were put on boats for the final journey to reservations in Oklahoma.

Trial of Tears board member Alison Stanfield said alternate locations to Florence have been informally discussed. But they await Florence’s decision before picking another site.

Debbie Wilson, director of Florence-Lauderdale Tourism, said the ride in September is the single largest weekend tourism event in the Shoals area.
