Peanut Butter Tied to Salmonella
Posted on February 15, 2007
- Federal health officials say an August salmonella
outbreak that has slowly grown to nearly 300 cases in 39 states
including Tennessee may be linked to tainted peanut butter.
The number of cases in Tennessee in this outbreak is 20.
According to state figures, the number of overall salmonella cases
so far this year is 25, down from 55 at this time last year.
The larger outbreak is believed to be the first salmonella
outbreak associated with peanut butter in U-S history. The tainted peanut butter was Peter Pan and Great Value with a lot number on the lid that begins with 2111. That lot number has been found in Lawrence County.
The largest number of cases were reported in New York,
Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee and Missouri.
The Centers for Disease Control says about 20 percent of the 288
infected people have been hospitalized, but none has died.
