Lady Eagles are District Champions

SUMMERTOWN – After being rained-out Thursday night, the District 12-A Softball
tournament concluded here Saturday, with Summertown and Collinwood facing one
another for the Championship. By virtue of their 6-4 win earlier in the week,
Collinwood held the upperhand, with the Lady Eagles having to beat the Trojanettes
twice to earn the Championship – and that is just what they did.

The Lady Eagles took care of business in the first game, led by hurler Kendra Davis
allowing only 2 Trojanette hits and the defense playing error free.
Davis led-off the game with a single, moved the third on a sacrifice bunt by Julie
Walker, then was plated on a RBI double by Emily Franks. The Lady Eagles would
score again in the top of the fourth, as Walker and Franks both led off with
singles, both would move up on a sacrifice bunt by Marissa Angus and Walker would
score on a sacrifice fly to right by Jody Springer.
In the top of the 5th, Davis would reach on a fielder’s choice and would score on a
RBI single by Walker. In the top of the 6th, Kelsey Long would get a 2-out
single, then score on a single by Brittany Wilkinson, giving the Lady Eagles a 4-0
lead.
The Lady Eagles banged out a total of 7 hits, led by Seniors Emily Franks (double &
single, 1 RBI) and Julie Walker (a pair of singles, 1 RBI)..
Davis took the win, striking out 5, allowing only 2 hits and issuing no walks.
Lacee Ray took the loss, striking out 1, giving up 7 hits and issuing no walks.
Ray was relieved in the 7th by Carly Dicus.

The Lady Eagles followed up the first win, to capture the District tournament
championship, downing the Trojanettes in the second Championship game 5-4.
The Lady Eagles did not score in the first, but the Trojanettes pushed across a
single run to take a 1-0 lead.
The score remained the same until the Lady Eagles brought out the heavy lumber in
the top of the fourth. Emily Franks leadoff the innng with a single to Center, then
Kelsey Long drew a 2-out walk. Brittany Wilkinson then stepped to the plate and
belted a 3-run Home Run over the Left field fence, giving the Lady Eagles a 3-1
lead. The next batter, Ashley Evans, then stepped to the plate, belting the
first pitch she faced over the left-centerfield fence for a solo Home Run, extending
the Lady Eagles’ lead to 4-1.
In the top of the 6th, Evans leadoff with a double to Center, then scored on a RBI
double by Kendra Davis, putting the Lady Eagles up 5-1. Neither team would score
again until the Trojanettes came to bat in the bottom of the 7th. Collinwood would
plate 3 runs on 3 hits and a hit batter, cutting the Lady Eagles’ lead to 5-4 with 1
out and a runner on second base. The next batter grounded to second, for the
second out, putting the tying run on third. The next batter hit a fly to short
Right field, where Lady Eagle freshman right-fielder Tosha Horne made a shoestring
catch for the final out, giving the Lady Eagles the win.
Kendra Davis again took the win, striking out 5, issuing only 2 walks and scattering
8 hits (3 of which were in the bottom of the 7th inning). Lacee Ray took the
loss, allowing 7 hits, issuing 4 walks and 2 strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Ray was relieved in the top of the 5th frame by Mache Stults, who pitched 2/3rds
innings, giving up 2 hits. Stults was relieved in the 6th frame by Carly Dicus
who finished the game with 2 strikeouts and 1 hit allowed in 2 innings of work.
The Lady Eagles’ offense was also led by Kendra Davis’ 3-for-3 at the plate, with a
double and a pair of singles, 1 walk and 1 RBI, followed by Brittany Wilkinson with
the 3-run home run, Ashley Evans’ 2-for-3 with the solo Home Run, and a double,
Emily Franks’ 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a walk, and Marissa Angus with a
pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt.
Both Collinwood and Summertown advance to the Region tournament level, which begins
on Monday, May 14th. As the District 12-A Champions, the Lady Eagles will host
the District 11-A runners-up, Richland, on Monday, May 14th at 7:00 PM. Meanwhile,
as the District 12-A Runners-up, the Trojanettes will travel to Columbia Academy,
the District 11-A Champions. The winners of these games will play for the Region
title, and the right to host the Sub-state, on Wednesday, May 16th. The Sub-State
will be on Friday, May 18th and the State Tournament is the week of May 21st in
Murfreesboro.
