Senate approves 42-cent hike on cigarettes; House considering
Posted on May 31, 2007

The state Senate voted today to more
than triple the state’s cigarette tax to 62 cents per pack.
The 42-cent increase was approved on a 17-to-16 vote.
The measure must still be approved by the House before it can
head for the governor’s consideration. The House may consider the
bill later today.
Governor Bredesen has proposed to use a 40-cent increase in the
tax to pay for sweeping changes to Tennessee’s school funding
formula.
