More Tennessee Students May Be Able to Attend College This Year
Posted on July 08, 2007

- More students may be able to attend
college this year.
That’s because of a 13-point-8 (m) million dollar boost in state
money for a program that provides grants for low-income college
students.
The grants are awarded through the Tennessee Student Assistance
Corporation and are given to families that earn less than
30-thousand dollars.
The grants were given to nearly 20-thousand students last year,
even though an additional 61-thousand students were eligible for
the program.
But officials say about 65-hundred more students will get awards
this year because of the new money, which is in addition to the
millions of dollars allocated in the 2008 state budget.
The new money is made available through the lottery reserve fund
and the recent increase in the tobacco tax.
