| Lawrence County School Food Called “Best Deal In Town” Posted on July 19, 2007 The Food Service Department of Lawrence County Schools is responsible for providing over 2,388 breakfast and 5,695 lunches daily in our 12 cafeterias. The Department operates within the requirements of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the State Department of Education and the State Department of Health. An exclusive, individual meal account number is assigned to each student. Pre-paid, cash or free and reduced meals use the same system; this ensures no overt identification of any student. Breakfast price is $1.00. Elementary lunches are priced at $1.60 with middle and high schools at $1.75. We suggest money be paid into the student?s account in advance (monthly, weekly or bi-weekly). Checks are recommended for payment. The entire amount of the check will be deposited into the child?s account; no change will be given. There will be a $10.00 fee for returned checks, with no more than 2 returned checks accepted per school year. Please check with your child?s school for the charge policies. No a la carte is allowed to be charged. FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEAL APPLICATIONS Meals are available free or at reduced prices of $.40 for lunch and $.30 for breakfast to students who qualify based on USDA income guidelines. These guidelines and lunch applications are available at the Food Service Office if you would like to fill out an application before school begins. Your child should be given a lunch application to take home at the beginning of the school year, which explains the program for school meal benefits. If you are not eligible now but have a decrease in household income, become unemployed, or have an increase in household size, you may fill out another application at that time. Applications are available at all school offices, cafeterias, or you can come by the Lawrence County Board of Education Food Service Office at 700 Mahr Avenue. If you prefer, we will send an application home with your child if you will call between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. at 931-762-2274 ext. 106 and request it. Our fax number is 931-762-7299. Our email address is dmckiss@lcss.us. For more information about free and reduced priced meals, or any other questions that you have about the School Nutrition Program, feel free to call or stop by our office. In a study of school meals by the United States Department of Agriculture, it was found that school lunches were superior to all other choices, including home-packed lunches, in meeting the recommended dietary allowances for key nutrients established for growing children. The school lunch is a vital part of the day. Teachers and child nutrition employees know that you cannot teach a hungry child. |
