TVA Shuts Down Browns Ferry Unit Because River Too Hot
Posted on August 17, 2007

TVA shut down a unit at the Browns Ferry
nuclear plant in north Alabama because water to cool the reactor
was too hot.
The federal utility shut down unit 2 shortly before 6 last night
because the Tennessee River temperature was exceeding a 90-degree
average over 24 hours.
TVA said it’s believed to be the first time one of its nuclear
units has been shut down because of river temperature.
Spokesman John Moulton said TVA would compensate for the loss of
power by buying power elsewhere.
Two other units at the plant near Athens, Alabama, are still
operating.
Moulton would not estimate when the unit would go back on line,
saying it will depend on the weather.
