Wayne Stages Largest Drug Bust In Counties History
Posted on September 25, 2007

WAYNESBORO, Tenn. – Authorities arrested dozens of people in the largest drug investigation in Wayne County’s history.

In Operation Bad Medicine, Wayne County Sheriff’s investigators arrested 38 people for dealing drugs including a pregnant woman and a 76-year-old grandmother.

“This is the largest drug round up that we’ve ever had in Wayne County,” said Sheriff Ric Wilson.

People were arrested during the four-month undercover investigation for selling prescription narcotics, methamphetamines and marijuana.

“Some of them would get a legitimate prescription and then sell it on the street,” an officer said.

One man was arrested for allegedly selling drugs in a school zone. Another arrestee said she had a drug problem and a nervous breakdown.

While 76-year-old Iva McLain said she was surprised by investigators knocking on her door.

“They just come and knocked on the door and I jumped up in my pajamas, and opened the door,” McLain said.

She was arrested for allegedly selling prescription medication.

“I ain’t done nothing,” she said.

Investigators said increasingly senior citizens on TennCare- the state’s managed care health program- are getting busted for selling drugs.

“The older people it’s easier for them to get on TennCare then it is the younger people,” Wilson said , “so these are the ones we deal with quite a bit and she is a multiple offender.”

“It’s all involved in TennCare, and when it comes to TennCare investigations it costs you and I, and all the taxpayers, money out of their pocket,” said an investigator.

Investigators said they’ve only made a small dent in a growing drug problem in the county, which is located on the Alabama-Tennessee line.

If the individuals didn’t post bond, many of them will spend the night in the Wayne County Jail. They’re expected to appear in court Tuesday to answer to felony drug charges.
