Tennessee Health Care Leaders Oppose Bush Veto Of Insurance Bill
Posted on October 08, 2007
Tennessee health care leaders say
President Bush’s veto of an initiative to expand children’s health
insurance will hurt uninsured children in the state as well as
underfunded hospitals.
Last week, Bush vetoed legislation that would increase spending
for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program by $35 billion
over five years. Bush has called for a $5 billion increase.
CoverKids, Tennessee’s new health insurance plan for children,
is a SCHIP program that provides coverage to more than 9,700
Tennessee children who would otherwise be uninsured.
Had the SCHIP bill passed, state officials would have been able
to expand coverage to more of the state’s 400,000 uninsured
children.
Craig Becker is president of the Tennessee Hospital Association.
He says the bill also contained a provision that would allow the
state to receive a special payment to help Tennessee providers
recoup some of the money lost each year on caring for Medicaid and
charity patients.
