LCHS Sweeps Lewis County

The Lawrence County Wildcats swept the Lewis County Panthers Tuesday night in
varsity basketball action.
The Lawrence County boys won their first game of the year, 69-52. The Lady Cats
stayed undefeated in the young season by outlasting the Lady Panthers, 58-51.
The boys jumped out to a 31-28 halftime lead behind Trent Williams’ nine points.
Williams finished the night with 18 points overall.
Lawrence County (1-1) led 50-45 after the third period, but were able to convert
11 of 14 free throw attempts in the fourth period to pull away from the Panthers
for the win.
Alex Stafford contributed 13 points for the Wildcats. Kyle Tenison had 13
points and Chace Helton had 10 for the 2-1 Panthers.
The Lady Cats (3-0) fell behind 16-9 after the first period, but Angela Spann’s
lay-up gave the Wildcats a 18-17 lead with 5:45 to play in the first half. The
Panthers battled back to tie the game at 22-22 with 1:26 left. Katie Hill’s
two-point and three-point field goals extended the lead to 27-22. Lewis
County’s Jessica Hinson hit a three pointer at the buzzer to close the gap to
27-25 at the half.
The Lady Cats came out in the second half and went on a 14-0 run to go up 41-25
with 3:00 left in the third period. The Lady Panthers came back with a 12-0 run
of their own to get within four points at 41-37. Spann’s three-pointer closed
the scoring for the period with Lawrence County on top 44-37.
Lewis County(2-1) got within five points with 2:03 to play, 52-47. The Lady
Cats hit 8 of 11 free throws in the fourth period to finish off the Lady
Panthers, 58-51.
Spann finished with 14 points, Hill had 13 including 3 three-pointers, and
Jordyn Luffman had 10, all in the second half. Erin Robbins had 9, Hannah Smith
8, and Jennie Johnston 4.
