Local Blood Drive To Honor Sacrifices of The Armed Services
Posted on November 29, 2007
Tens of millions of Americans have served in the United States Armed
Services over the past century. Hundreds of thousands gave their lives
while serving. The contributions and sacrifices of active members and
Veterans of the Armed Services are vital to maintaining the freedoms and
way of life enjoyed by all Americans.*
The lives of countless war veterans were saved because donated blood was
available to treat their injuries. The need for blood is continuous.
On any given day, an average of 38,000 units of red blood cells are
needed for patients in the United States.
You can help by donating blood in honor of active members and Veterans
of the Armed Services on Thursday, Dec. 13, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. at
the City Administration Building located at 218 Gaines Street in
Lawrenceburg. For more information on blood donation, call
1-800-GIVE-LIFE.
All presenting donors will have the opportunity to sign a holiday card
for active members and veterans. You may also take a card to give to a
military family member or friend.
In addition to whole blood, donors will have the opportunity to give
double red cells. Unlike traditional whole blood donations, which are
sent to the laboratory for separation into components, this process
separates your blood into its components as it is being drawn. The
donor’s plasma, which contains vitamins, minerals and nutrients in
blood, is returned to the donor during the donation process, along with
a small amount of saline solution. Because red cells are the component
most needed for blood types O+, O-, A- and B-, double red cell donation
allows you to give just what patients need.
The American Red Cross is the only blood collection agency that offers
health and safety training, serves as the vital emergency communication
link between military personnel and their families at home, teaches
disaster preparedness, and responds to disasters of all types and sizes.
If you are at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and
are in good general health, you may be eligible to donate blood. For
more information or to find a blood drive near you, please call
1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543).
