Summertown sweeps Loretto

by Scott Franks

SUMMERTOWN – The Summertown Lady Eagles and Eagles were none too kind to their
visitors from southern Lawrence County, as they swept the Lady Mustangs and Mustangs
in High School Basketball action here Monday night.

In the opener, the Lady Eagles would take an early 9-2 lead and lead 12-9 at
the end of the first. In the second period, the hosts would outscore the
visitors 17-14 to extend their lead to 29-23 by the intermission.

The real difference in the game would come in the third period, as the Lady
Eagles would explode out to a 17-point lead (51-34) by the mid-point of the
third period and outscored the Lady Mustangs 22-12 in the period to lead 51-35
going into the final quarter.

The Lady Mustangs would rebound in the final period, slowly whittling the
lead, as the Lady Eagles struggled to find the basket. Loretto would cut
the lead to 55-51 on a pair of Abby Laws free throws with 2:16 to play, but
the Lady Eagles would respond, as Addeana Adams would sink 5 of 6 free throws
over the next 3 possessions, but the Lady Mustangs would respond with baskets
on each possession to keep the lead at only 4. The Lady Eagles would sink
13 of 15 from the charity stripe in the final period and took the win by a
final score of 66-57.

The Lady Eagles were led by Haley Lovett with 19 points (1 trey), Paige Smith
with 18, Kayla Clark with 16 (3 treys), Adeanna Adams with 5, Erica Peterson
(1 trey) and Sommer Smith with 3 each, followed by Sara Dickey and Courtney
Grooms with 1 each. The Lady Mustangs were led by Heather Dunkin with 23
points (1 trey), Abby Laws with 18, Logan Dooley with 6, Kinsley Williams with
5, Tia Moore with 3 (1 trey) and Becca Curtis with 2.

The Lady Eagles improve to 16-10 overall (8-5 in District 12-A), while the Lady
Mustangs fall to 13-12 overall (7-6 in District 12-AA).

In the boys’ game, the Mustangs could only stay with the Eagles for half of the
opening period. After the Mustangs took a 3-0 lead on an opening trey, the
Eagles would knot the score at 9-9 by the 4:00 mark, then go ahead on a pair of
Clint Gobbell free throws with 3:31 remaining in the first. From that point
on, it was all Eagles. Summertown would lead 21-10 by the end of the opening
period, then explode to a 21-5 scoring advantage in the second period to lead
45-15 at the intermission.

In the third period, it would be more of the same, as the Eagles would seem to
score at-will, holding a 20-10 scoring advantage in the third to lead 62-25 by
the end of the third and took the win by a final score of 71-37.

The Eagles had 5 players in double-figures, led by Nick Nance with 19 points (2
treys), Clint Gobbell with 16 (1 trey), Wes Long with 13 (3 treys), Chris
Carrington with 12 (1 trey), Frank Campbell with 10 and Logan Harville with 1.
