Seventh Grader At Ethridge Who Is Accused Of Writing “Hit List” Is Back In Class

A seventh grader in Lawrence County accused of writing a hit-list returned to class Tuesday.

Another child discovered the list that in addition to containing names of her classmates included the weapons she wanted to use on them about two weeks ago.

The seventh grader was suspended pending a hearing.

Upset parents, like David Harris, said they are concerned about the way the situation was handled by the principal and the school system.

“My daughter didn’t want to go to school this morning,” Harris told News 2. “She said she didn’t want to go. That’s enough right there for me to want to speak out and say, ‘Hey, look this ain’t right’… and all the other kids are the same. They didn’t want to go. They don’t want to be there. They don’t want to be around her and like I say, I don’t know that it’s in fear, or being put back in front of her and they don’t know how to act they don’t know what she’s going to do.”

The principal said all policies and procedures were followed.

When a similar incident occurred at another Lawrence County school a few years, that student was expelled. Parents feel that should have happened in the most recent case as well.

The school district’s policy does not consider threats a zero-tolerance offense.

Director of Schools Bill Heath would not go into specifics on the incident but said the school district, Ethridge Elementary School and law enforcement investigated.

He said the school system is confident there is no threat of harm or danger to the students of Ethridge Elementary School.
