Posted on April 03, 2008
The Lawrence County Wildcats (10-5, 4-2) extended their
winning streak to three games, and vaulted themselves into second place in
district 8-AAA, with a double header sweep of Franklin County (11-5, 3-5).
Clay Brown (4-0) took the ball for the Wildcats in game one, earning the
victory by tossing the complete game. Brown allowed four runs – only one
earned – on 10 hits while sitting down four rebels on strikes. Franklin
County, who was the visiting team despite the game being played on their
home field, opened the scoring in the top of the third, taking advantage of
two Wildcat errors to plate three runs and take the early 3-0 lead. Blake
Rogers answered for the Wildcats in the bottom of the frame with a two out,
two-run homer to cut the deficit to 3-2, and an inning later, the ‘Cats tied
the game at 3-3. Franklin County took the lead in the top of the seventh
with a two out, RBI single from Chris Plattenburg, but Rogers answered for
Lawrence County again in the last of the seventh, blooping a walk-off two
run double down the line in right to give the ‘Cats the 5-4 win. Plattenburg
(0-1) took the loss for the Rebels.
Rogers carried the Lawrence County offense, posting a 3-for-4 game with a
double, a homer, a run scored and four RBI; while Andrew Nutt was 1-for-2
with a pair of walks and two runs scored. Lawrence County scored five runs
on eight hits and committed three errors, while Franklin County posted four
runs on 10 hits and played errorless baseball.
Drew Stofel started game two for the Wildcats, and he was on fire to start
the game, fanning five of the first nine batters. Stofel also helped jump
start the offense, belting a one out double ahead of Dylan Bosheers’ RBI
single to give the ‘Cats the 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Andrew Nutt
knocked in Bosheers in the fifth to stretch the lead to 2-0, before the
Wildcats exploded in the sixth. Justin Purcell crushed a two-run homer to
make the lead 4-0, and freshman Colt Kelso followed with a solo homer in his
first at bat as a Wildcat. Stofel (2-3) allowed two runs in the sixth and
seventh innings, but that was all the Rebels could muster, as Blake Rogers
(2) notched the save in the ‘Cats second 5-4 win on the day. Scott Ricketts
was saddled with the loss for Franklin County.
Bosheers was 2-for-3 in the game with a stolen base, a run scored, and an
RBI; and Nutt was 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Wildcats scored five runs on 10
hits, while Franklin County plated four runs on eight hits. Neither team
committed an error in the game.
The Wildcats continue their season, weather permitting, on Thursday when the
Spring Hill Raiders (6-7) come to Lawrenceburg.
