Wes Smith Honored As Male Athlete Of The Year At UNA

Men’s golf All-American Wes Smith received the male University of North
Alabama Student-Athlete of the Year award for 2008-09. Wes is the son of Lori
Powers and Greg Smith. His grand-parents are Steve and Dianne Williams and Hewlett
and Nell Smith all from Lawrenceburg.

Smith, a senior from Florence, holds a 3.56 cumulative grade point
average in marketing, is a three-time All-Gulf South Conference
performer and two-time Academic All-GSC selection. A two-time
All-American, he was also UNA’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year as a
sophomore.

This season he helped lead the UNA golf team to its first GSC golf title in the
school’s 38 years in the league.
Smith
also has been involved on campus, and in the community. He volunteers
his time and efforts to support the Healing Place Charity, reads at
Riverhill School, and is involved with Toys for Tots, the YMCA and the
Make A Wish Foundation.
“Wes is as fine as they come,” golf coach
Billy Gamble said. “He is very active in the community and in his
major. In all my years of coaching, Wes is one of a very few players
that cares more about the team than his own success. He is a leader and
a role model for all young people.”
Smith will graduate May 9 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.
